Capella

Dr. Anne gives Capella FIVE PIZOES!!!!! but: since it's a private univ (and top rated at that!) it would cost about $4000 to $8000 per semester - they use a quarter system and therefore might suck up 90% or even 100% of all FAFSA money! alas.... (full report, follows the blurbs and links to capella.... -[
]- -[]- -[]- -[]- -[]- -[]- -[]- -[]- Right now it does NOT look viable. The program (and as i sed the recomendations that i got from Dr. Anne (my librarian friend) looks superb, but it's all pretty much boiled down to about the money. The cost without any money coming in right now (which of course could change at any time; or not) would have to be 100% FAFSA funded -- well give or take "pocket change" that i could wheedle out of my parents - who are both in favor of the idea. But for right now, unless things change - which would have to be full-time technical position (eg, Q/C engineer, systems tester/designer, etc - there's *lot* of diff between these $7.50 - $10/hour day jobs that i'm doing now and a real tech/career job of say $60K+/year). But, the IT/.net market is v. tight and almost all of the jobs are v. tightly niche ones. So far *no* real bites - a couple of near misses and some phone pre-screen I/V's but nothing face to face yet. Not like the old pre Y2K / 9-11 days for sure. So, the way it looks is that pretty much 95%+ of the FAFSA would go to *just* tuition and fees. But, then right now i'd have to find money for textbooks, and of course any of the inevitable costs - if nothing else month-to-month on a I/Net I/F and such. Unless, there are *some* sort of teaching assistant ships or such, i'm going to have to bow out for now. I do really appreciate the time and effort that you've put into this on my behalf, but right now i'll mainly be concentrating on going thru the teacher certification process (which i start this saturday and for which i *was* able to scrape up the $400 - ie, 10% down being all required, the rest out of my pay checks on a monthly basis when i start teaching). Again, stay in touch occasionally and i will certainly let you know if anything changes. The only thing would be if Capella had some sort of STUDENT ASSISTANT or GRANT money avail. I was a lab assistant in the Art Department and helped prep classes and demo's - but a little hard to do that via a V/R env. Grading papers? And of course, i will continue to think highly and recommend the program as well. Would that i could. Argosy University

I appreciate the straight-forward way that you deal with this. I'd rather know that i have to come up with such and so $$'s or travel to XYZ up front than trying to "patch it all together at the last minute". Anyway, everything looks good from here. But, see notes/QQ's below... One QQ that came up was about the residency and non-covered fees (i noticed in one of the links which i've just glanced at).. how much are those, and when would they be due? Up front, i'm mainly looking at just being able to depend on the FAFSA money. I do really appreciate the time and effort that you're put-ing into this on my behalf. SO, other than this, i'm mainly concentrating on going thru the teacher certification process (which i start this saturday and for which i *was* able to scrape up the $400 - ie, 10% down being all required, the rest out of my pay checks on a monthly basis when i start teaching). So, anyway, as i sed, right now i'm looking at only having (other than a bit of wheedling money) the FAFSA, unless i get a full-time technical position (eg, Q/C engineer, systems tester/designer, etc - there's *lot* of diff between $7.50 - $10/hour and $60K+/year) - which could happen at any time and would be preferable; but one can't depend on the future. Also, a few questions as well.... >> Subject: Argosy University Online Programs >> Date: Tue, 2 Oct 2007 11:49:17 -0400 >> From: msaflin@argosy.edu >> To: fleeding@hotmail.com >> >> >> >> Hello Richard, >> Thank you for considering Argosy University Online Programs. Our unique >> approach of offering a traditional educational experience >> via an online format coupled with unparalleled personal >> service makes Argosy the preferred choice in online education. >> >> A few points to consider when comparing universities: >> >> Tuition rates are listed in semester or quarter credit hours >> depending on the school. Be sure you are comparing apples >> to apples. Again, Argosy is semester right? i;ll need to check the curriculuum, etc. >> >> Be cognizant of additional fees; >> >> (residency, >> internet, etc.) This should just be my usual I/net and phone stuff right?? (it's a dial up and v. high - usually about 128 Kbps, but i may be switching over to cable soon - renewal and all that) >> >> Typically, fees are not covered by financial aid and not >> reimbursed by employers. >> Again, i'll have to look at the fee sched and see what that's like. if it's around $200 or so, no problem - otherwise, its back to FAFSA, etc. >> Is the university accredited by an accrediting body that >> is recognized by the US Department of Education? >> Everything looks good for that. Like i said, WNU had some really serious BBB and accred issues. not good. i'm not exactly sure who could afford that. Oddest thing was that the faculty there who had graduated from WNU wouldn't be quallifed to teach *at* WNU on the basis of *just* their record there. V. v. odd... hmmmm? >> Are you required to physically attend the campus for any >> reason or is the program completely online? For example: >> Are you required to take a final exam for each class, >> in person before a proctor? So, these *are* 100% on line right? I can arrange to have them proctored at any number of univ's here in the DFW area - UT dallas, UT Denton, TCU, SMU, TWU - pretty densely edu-populated this area. >> >> >> Feel free to contact me if you have any questions; >> I am now accepting applications for our June 28th class. >> >> Start your application now >> Will prob do that either later today, or early tommorrow. Also: Is there a "out-of-state" residency fee of ANY sort? What are ALL of the up-front fees and which ones ARE covered by FAFSA? If there are some small ones, that's ok (he sed as his bank account dwindled down to nothing, nothing, nothing... at all). >> Applying with Argosy University is easy. >> Just follow a few simple steps. >> Again ya'll's program looks v. good and am looking forward to getting "back to work". That is, edu-wise. I'd *really* like to just get on with teaching rather than going back into industry - always the lure of $$$++; yet another friend of mine left teaching to go work for one of the places on the west coast - A new baby in the family and such. I mean the idea of making 4 to 5 times as much working for (eg) pixar or such is a *real* draw. I know for him it was a bummer decision and prob as soon as he gets the home life back to normal, he'll prob go back teaching. Of course, the *totally* absurd thing is that most people don't realise what you give up to teach. But, hey -- if we were in it for the money, we'd have become MD's or lawyers. Take care, and will talk soonest, richard traynham (Frank)... >> Thank you, >> Melanie >> Melanie L.
